(FreePressBeacon.com) – In an alarming attack that has been attributed to radical leftist groups, several fiber optic networks in France were deliberately damaged early today, just days after a series of arson events disrupted major high-speed train routes during the Olympics opening ceremony.
Police reported that cables for multiple telecom operators were intentionally cut in six regions across the country. Notably, Paris remained unaffected by this wave of sabotage.
Local news outlet Le Parisien detailed that the cables, located in electrical cabinets owned by telecom companies SFR and Bouygues, were cut in the south of France.
Additional damage was reported in the Meuse region near Luxembourg and the Oise area close to Paris. This vandalism primarily impacted landline services rather than mobile networks.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for these recent disruptions to France’s infrastructure.
This sabotage took place merely three days after similar attacks halted services on three main high-speed train lines connecting Paris with cities like Lille, Bordeaux, and Strasbourg.
Meanwhile, vigilant night-shift workers thwarted a potential fourth disruption on the Paris-Marseille line.
The train service interruptions last Friday affected travel plans for at least 250,000 passengers, including international travelers from the U.K. via Eurostar.
In response to these incidents, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced that intelligence services are actively pursuing those behind the sabotage, which he characterized as “prepared and coordinated.”
He added that they “had a clear objective: blocking the high-speed train network” ahead of the Olympics opening ceremony.
Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castera condemned the attacks, expressing, “Playing against the Games is playing against France, against your own camp, against your country.”
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin revealed that authorities have identified several suspects linked to these rail disruptions and suspect connections to far-left French anarchist groups.
According to Darmanin, as reported by France 24, the precision of these attacks is “the traditional type of action of the ultra-left” and urged caution before officially naming any suspects.
“These are people who may be close to this movement,” he added and indicated ongoing investigations into whether the suspects acted independently or were influenced by others.
As of now, service on all affected train lines has been restored.
