Ryan Michael “Reily” English from Massachusetts traveled to the U.S. Capitol, where he expressed to a Capitol Police Officer his desire to “turn himself in.”
English was equipped with a folding knife and Molotov cocktails made from Absolut vodka bottles, aiming to target Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.
His intended violence derived from reading Reddit posts, highlighting the radicalization dangers online platforms can fuel.
English approached the Capitol with a folding knife, lighter, and two Molotov cocktails.
He rationalized these devices as tools intended to “kill Scott Bessent,” a claim that emerged during his arrest.
Arrest details reveal English left his phone behind to avoid surveillance, using an atlas to navigate to D.C.
Once there, English planned to use the Molotov cocktail and even contemplated “suicide by cop” to achieve his mission.
“I’d like to turn myself in,” English told a Capitol police officer, according to The Boston Globe.

English’s car contained additional materials: a bottle of Smirnoff vodka and a modified sweatshirt.
Inside, a note apologizing to a loved one underscored his mental state prior to these actions.
His preparedness to potentially kill police officers further adds to the gravity of his intentions.
Authorities remain on high alert amid such risks to elected officials.
Ryan English has been charged with weapon possession and carrying a dangerous weapon or explosive on Capitol grounds, held without bond pending a detention hearing.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the critical role of vigilant law enforcement in thwarting threats to our political leaders.
“These actions were specifically to ‘depose’ these political offices and send a message,” reads an affidavit, cited by CBS News.
This incident is reminiscent of past threats against President Donald Trump and his administration, proving that the need for heightened security and awareness remains critical.
