Archaeologists have unearthed a limestone sarcophagus at the Church of Saint Nicholas, an excavation site since 1989.
This relic, found in a two-story annex, signals what could be the original resting place of Saint Nicholas, a figure of both historical and cultural importance.
Its discovery shows promise in answering questions long kept in mystery. The sarcophagus is around 2 meters long, with a distinctive raised lid.
Researchers, led by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, excavate under the “Legacy of the Future” project.
The lead archaeologist, Associate Professor Ebru Fatma Findik, expressed hopes of finding inscriptions on the sarcophagus that could help date it and verify its contents.
Saint Nicholas, a Greek bishop known for his acts of kindness, especially toward the poor, served as a bishop of Myra.
His legend gives rise to the modern Santa Claus, spreading joy and celebration on a global scale every December.
The church built over his believed burial site was constructed by Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II during the 6th century.
“Some sources suggest that St. Nicholas was buried near the sacred area of the city of Myra. The fact that we have found a sarcophagus near the church, which is thought to house his tomb, may indicate that this is indeed the sacred area we have been searching for. This is a significant archaeological confirmation of historical sources regarding the burial place of St. Nicholas,” Findik said, cited by Interesting Engineering.
The sarcophagus was located just below the current church floor, aligning with electronic surveys that unveiled gaps and led to the unearthing of the ancient basilica.
Confirming historical records and local lore, this area now gains a level of validation relevant to Saint Nicholas’ legendary origins.
The sarcophagus discovery could boost tourism as historians and believers alike are keen to witness a place possibly connected to such a globally adored figure.
This ongoing excavation, while culturally significant, also mirrors the rich Christian heritage present in Turkey over centuries.
Saint Nicholas remains a vital part of cultural history, spreading his timeless message of charity.
The excavation continues with hopes of unraveling more about this once hidden treasure.
