Shane Lamond, once a respected officer with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, now stands convicted of lying about leaking information to Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys’ leader.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson found Lamond guilty of obstructing justice and making false statements.
Lamond’s sentencing is scheduled for April 3.
Lamond’s association with Tarrio dates back to 2019 when he was responsible for monitoring groups like the Proud Boys.
Accusations against Lamond included leaking details to Tarrio, who burned a Black Lives Matter banner, alerting him about arrest warrants, and providing updates on police investigations.
Though Lamond and Tarrio testified, denying these events, the judge found their testimonies lacking credibility.
“Lamond and Tarrio talk, and Tarrio immediately disseminates what he learns,” said Judge Amy Berman Jackson, cited by AP.
Defense attorney Mark Schamel voiced disappointment with the verdict and hinted at the possibility of an appeal.
Lamond, who denied being a Proud Boys sympathizer, claimed his communications with Tarrio were purely professional.
However, evidence showed Lamond expressed support for the Proud Boys even after January 6.
Tarrio, described by the judge as an unreliable witness, pleaded guilty to burning the banner and received 22 years for his role in the Capitol riot.
He allegedly used his arrest as a “marketing ploy” before January 6.
Lamond’s verdict, reached after a bench trial, painted him as a “double agent” for the Proud Boys, tipping off Tarrio about upcoming charges.
“I don’t support the Proud Boys, and I’m not a Proud Boys sympathizer,” Lamond said.
This case raises concerns about the integrity of law enforcement amidst political and ideological conflicts.
