(FreePressBeacon.com) – Relying on his highly respected career, George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley recently dropped a bombshell by predicting Hunter Biden’s fate.
Although Hunter defied expectations by suddenly changing his plea, Turley believes Joe Biden’s son will likely face prison time over tax charges if federal prosecutors push for it.
Hunter’s lawyers initially pleaded “not guilty,” but they recently announced they would change his plea to guilty.
This move avoided a trial that was set to start this week. However, Turley thinks Biden’s legal team waited too long to strike a deal, which could hurt his chances of staying out of jail.
“Timing is important. You can get a better deal if you plead early rather than late,” Turley explained. “It’s sort of like waiting for the water to reach the deck on the Titanic before you ask about swimming lessons.
“I mean, it’s a little bit late for some of those options and so he really has succeeded in putting himself in the worst possible position in terms of a plea,” he added. “This is the penalty for a lawyer standing in federal court and telling prosecutors quote, ‘just rip it up.’”
Back in July 2023, Hunter pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and a felony gun charge.
This happened after a plea bargain fell apart when U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika cast doubt on the initial deal between federal prosecutors and Hunter.
Turley believes it would be odd for the Department of Justice not to seek jail time after all this drama.
“So that may ultimately prompt the president to pursue a pardon or commutation. We’ll have to see. The odds at this point favor jail time. They didn’t when the Justice Department was still in favor of a plea agreement after it collapsed,” Turley explained.
Hunter is looking at up to 17 years in prison if convicted on all nine counts from another indictment for failing to pay over $1 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019.
Additionally, he was convicted on three felony counts related to the 2018 purchase of a .38-caliber revolver after jurors deliberated for just over three hours.
Turley also mentioned that Hunter should have pleaded guilty shortly after the indictment was announced.
