(FreePressBeacon.com) – Taking a step back amid swirling rumors, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has decided not to join Kamala Harris as her potential vice-presidential candidate.
Cooper, who is currently serving his second term as govеrnor, recently announced he would not seek the vice-presidential position in Harris’s upcoming presidential campaign. His decision narrows the fiеld of possible candidates for the role.
“I strongly support Vice President Harris’ campaign for President. I know she’s going to win and I was honored to be considered for this role,” Cooper shared on X.
He explained his choice, noting, “This just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket.”
“As I’ve said from the beginning, she has an outstanding list of people from which to choose, and we’ll all work to make sure she wins,” he added,
According to CNN, Harris’s campaign had approached Cooper about the vetting process but he declined to participate.
It was reported that at 67 years old, Cooper had reservations about the demands of the vetting process.
Additionally, there were concerns among North Carolina Democrats that Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson would assume gubernatorial duties whenever Cooper was out of state, as per the state constitution.
The pool of candidates still in consideration for Harris’s running mate includes several prominent figurеs: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Meanwhilе, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has expressed her support for Harris’s campaign against the GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump, although she has stated she does not intend to be Harris’s running mate.
Governor Cooper, who first assumed office in 2017 after winning the 2016 election, is ineligible to run for a third term as governor.
Notably, Trump won North Carolina in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.
