Pro-Life Victory – Judge Stops Ultra-Lib AG

(FreePressBeacon.com) – In a major legal triumph, a federal judge has blocked New York Attorney General Letitia James from restricting the speech of two pro-life ministries.

This critical ruling safeguards the ministries’ constitutional right to advocate for “abortion-pill reversal.”

Federal Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr. issued a preliminary injunction on September 24, 2024, in Buffalo, New York.

This order prevents AG James from prosecuting or intimidating Summit Life Outreach Center and the Evergreen Association for advocating “abortion-pill reversal.”

The judge’s decision comes after the Thomas More Society filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of these organizations.

The lawsuit claims that James’ efforts to silence these pregnancy help organizations violate the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

Thomas More Society Executive Vice President Peter Breen called the injunction a crucial victory for pro-life entities and a rebuke to AG James’ actions.

“This injunction marks a critical victory for New York’s pregnancy help organizations and another blow to Letitia James’ unconstitutional witch-hunt against pro-life ministries,” Breen said.

“This court order makes clear Ms. James cannot censor pro-life speech purely because she dislikes it,” he stated.

The lawsuit filed by Thomas More Society attorneys is a key moment in the battle between pro-life ministries and the government.

The ruling emphasizes the existing legal precedent that protects the right to discuss “abortion-pill reversal,” a treatment involving high doses of progesterone to counteract the effects of the mifepristone abortion pill.

Judge Sinatra’s order also aligns with a previous ruling in the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. James case, further establishing pro-life ministries’ right to share their message.

Notably, Summit Life Outreach Center Executive Director Barbara Bidak thanked the defense provided by the Thomas More Society.

“We’re incredibly pleased a federal judge has now made clear that Attorney General Letitia James’ legal attacks on our state’s pro-life ministries unconstitutionally chills our First Amendment right to share the lifesaving message of Abortion Pill Reversal,” Bidak said.

Despite this victory, the battle is not over. AG James has already filed an appeal in the case in an attempt to reverse this ruling.

Her determination to restrict these ministries’ speech reinforces pro-life advocates’ argument that her actions unconstitutionally chill their First Amendment rights.

As the legal dispute continues, the preliminary injunction is a significant check on government overreach.

With ongoing support and legal advocacy, pro-life pregnancy centers in New York will continue to provide life-affirming options for women.

By doing so, they will continue to show their unwavering support for free speech and the sanctity of life.
