(FreePressBeacon.com) – The Democratic Party is on the verge of imploding ahead of the elections, as leading Democratic figure Rep. Adam Smith of Washington has publicly urged Joe Biden to end his reelection campaign.
During an interview on CNN with Jake Tapper, Smith, who serves as the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, revealed he was concerned about Biden’s recent debate performance.
“Well, look, I think he should step aside. I think it’s become clear that he’s not the best person to carry the Democratic message,” Smith stated.
He further elaborated, “The president’s performance in the debate was alarming to watch and the American people have made it clear they no longer see him as a credible candidate to serve four more years as president. Since the debate, the president has not seriously addressed these concerns.”
Smith emphasized that Biden should withdraw “as soon as possible.”
Smith’s remarks align with a broader sentiment among his colleagues. He was part of a private discussion with three other senior House Democrats—Reps. Jerry Nadler and Joe Morelle of New York and Mark Takano of California.
They collectively expressed their belief that Biden should step aside. All are prominent members of key committees, which gives their collective opinion even more weight.
This group’s call for Biden to reconsider his candidacy brings the number of Democratic lawmakers voicing similar sentiments to nearly a dozen, as NBC News reported.
Highlighting an alternative, Smith expressed his support for Kamala Harris, suggesting she would be a more effective candidate.
“Personally, I think Kamala Harris would be a much better, stronger candidate because she is, constitutionally, second. That’s the way it’s supposed to work,” he clarified.
Smith criticized the strategy of moving past the debate debacle, a sentiment echoed by some within the party.
Smith countered, “A lot of Democrats are saying: ‘Well let’s move on, let’s stop talking about it’. We are not the ones who are bringing it up. The country is bringing it up. And the campaign strategy of ‘be quiet and fall in line and let’s ignore it’ simply isn’t working.”
Despite the internal party challenges, Biden remains defiant, “I’m getting frustrated by the elites in the party, ‘Oh, they know so much more.'”
“Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention,” he challenged.
