(FreePressBeacon.com) – In an audacious move, President-elect Donald Trump is poised to demand a radical increase in the defense spending of the US-led NATO alliance, urging member nations to allocate a minimum of 5% of their GDP—over double the existing 2% target.

This demand, however, may strain international relationships and spark heated debates among allies.

Donald Trump’s push for NATO allies to meet a new 5% defense spending target comes as no surprise to those familiar with his first term.

Currently, only five NATO countries meet similar targets, including the United States.

Despite Trump’s warnings, only 23 out of 32 member countries adhere to the 2% GDP defense spending target.

European discussions are anticipated to set an initial benchmark at the NATO summit in June, potentially aiming for a more feasible 3% figure.

During his previous tenure, Trump suggested a defense spending target of 4% GDP.

The new initiative, aiming even higher at 5%, seems to leverage favorable trade agreements with the United States as an incentive for allies to comply.

“Donald Trump has said he will require NATO countries to spend at least five per cent of their GDP on defense,” The Daily Mail notes in a report.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has also voiced the need for increased defense spending, indicating future security challenges necessitate contributions beyond the existing 2% GDP target.

“If you want to keep the deterrence at the present level, 2% is not enough,” Rutte emphasized.

Trump’s proposals extend beyond defense budgets.

He seeks a diplomatic end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, continuing military aid to ensure Ukrainian support as leverage in discussions, possibly at Europe’s expense.

“President Trump believes European nations should meet their NATO defense spending obligations,” Trump-Vance transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated.

As tensions rise concerning financial commitments, Trump’s team remains clear on expectations: Change is anticipated following his January inauguration.

An increase in defense spending linked to favorable trade terms may represent a strategic move to maintain peace through strength.
