Jim Desmond, a San Diego County Supervisor, expressed concern to Fox News about the ongoing situation, suggesting that this influx of migrants might become a new norm with unforeseen consequences.
Migrants arriving in Southern California typically encounter a predictable process. After navigating the border fence, they are detained by Border Patrol agents, processed at a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility, and then often released at local transit stations. Many of these individuals, Desmond noted, leave the area quickly, heading to destinations like the East Coast, though details about their movements remain largely unknown.
El Cajon, near downtown San Diego, has emerged as a key drop-off point for migrants. Mayor Bill Wells highlighted the longstanding challenges of border management but criticized the current state of affairs for allowing easier entry for potentially dangerous individuals.
The San Diego sector reported an 85% increase in border encounters in February compared to the previous year, with record-breaking numbers anticipated to continue. This situation contrasts with official statements from the Biden administration asserting that the borders remain closed, as frontline Border Patrol agents deal with a high volume of asylum seekers.
Desmond acknowledged the challenges faced by Border Patrol agents, citing their limited capacity under the current system. He and Wells have observed significant numbers of migrants at local transit stations, often without adequate facilities. Some migrants end up at San Diego Airport, used as a makeshift shelter, with many eventually moving to other U.S. cities.
Previously, migrants were processed at a converted school in San Diego, funded by the county until the budget was depleted earlier than expected. While a new funding plan was approved to address the issue, Desmond voted against it, advocating for a more systematic and lawful immigration process.
The topic of immigration has become increasingly significant for many Americans, with a large portion of Californians expressing concerns over border security. Local residents like Mark Good and his wife Pat emphasize the importance of legal immigration, sharing personal experiences of family members who immigrated through official channels.
