The Liverpool forward’s Lamborghini veered off the road in Spain after a tire burst, leaving behind a devastated family, including his new bride and three young children.
Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 26, died when their vehicle crashed near Zamora, Spain, around midnight today.
The accident occurred a mere 11 days after Jota married Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
Police investigators believe a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle caused the crash, which resulted in the car catching fire.
This sudden loss has shaken the soccer community worldwide. Jota was not just any player – he had become a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success since his £45 million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
During his time with the club, he scored an impressive 65 goals in 182 appearances and helped the team secure Premier League glory.
This tragedy has particular poignancy as it came just after what should have been one of the happiest times in Jota’s life.
The timing of his death – so soon after celebrating his marriage – has added another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating situation.
His brother Andre was a professional player for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed on behalf of the country Jota’s death, “The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored the name of Portugal, and his brother, is unexpected and tragic.”
Beyond his club success, Jota was a proud representative of his homeland on the international stage.
He made 49 appearances for the Portuguese national team and won the UEFA Nations League twice.
His national team colleague and soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo expressed disbelief over the death, noting they had recently spent time together representing Portugal.
Likewise, Liverpool Football Club released a statement expressing their devastation at the loss of a player who had become beloved by fans for both his skill on the field and character off it.
Former teammates and clubs, including FC Porto and former Liverpool stars, have joined the outpouring of tributes from across the sporting world.
“Liverpool Football Club [is] devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the league lamented.
Similar to Liverpool FC, the Portuguese Football Federation emphasized that the loss of both Jota and his brother represents a significant blow to Portuguese soccer.
Federation President Fernando Gomes noted Jota’s impact extended far beyond his technical abilities on the pitch.
He called him “an extraordinary person, respected by all his colleagues and opponents” who had “a contagious joy and was a reference in his community.”
As investigations into the exact circumstances continue, fans around the world are left mourning a talent taken far too soon – a family man who had just begun a new chapter of his life, only to have it end in heartbreaking fashion.
On behalf of the European football community, we are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward, along with his brother André Silva.
