Capitol insiders reveal many are leaning toward allowing Trump discretion, especially following President Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter.
This move could reshape presidential clemency norms.
Republican senators have expressed a willingness to let Trump decide on pardons for the January 6 protesters, The Hill notes in a report.
Trump’s expression of a plan to pardon these individuals on “Day 1″ of assuming office has ruffled some political feathers.
However, the pardon of Hunter Biden has provided a semblance of precedent for such actions.
Republican figures like Sen. John Cornyn acknowledge Trump’s right to pardon, while suggesting limits.
“We’ve seen what President Biden did with his son, and presidents have that prerogative and it really doesn’t involve Congress,” Cornyn stated, pinpointing the expansive presidential pardoning powers, cited by AOL.
Over 1,250 individuals were convicted or pled guilty for January 6 activities, many serving prison sentences.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has stood firm, opposing any sentence reductions for those involved. Some GOP members, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, have voiced opposing views, with Graham stating, “I don’t see a reason for them to go to jail.”
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and others showed hesitance, underscoring political tensions.
“I would not be in favor of shortening any of the sentences of any of the people who pleaded guilty to crimes,” McConnell expressed, emphasizing a more stringent stance on the matter.
Sen. John Cornyn deemed those who’ve been convicted of federal crimes as not “hostages,” contradicting Trump’s description of January 6 convicts.
These comments hint at the internal divide within the GOP regarding the pardons, reflecting concerns over legal accountability.
While former Vice President Mike Pence hasn’t endorsed Trump for the 2024 election, GOP insiders are keenly watching Trump’s first actions if elected.
The January 6 pardon discourse remains a defining element, shaping not just future GOP dynamics, but also the larger narrative of presidential pardon powers.
