Beijing’s Communist regime has delivered a chilling blow to press freedom by convicting 78-year-old pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai in a sham trial that could imprison him for life simply for speaking truth to power.
Story Snapshot
- Jimmy Lai convicted by government-vetted judges under Beijing’s draconian national security law
- 78-year-old media founder faces life imprisonment for exercising free speech rights
- Trial conducted without jury demonstrates complete erosion of Hong Kong’s judicial independence
- President Trump has raised Lai’s case with China, highlighting diplomatic tensions
Communist Show Trial Delivers Predetermined Verdict
Three government-vetted judges found Jimmy Lai guilty of conspiring to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious articles on December 15, 2025. The 78-year-old founder of Apple Daily pleaded not guilty to all charges in what international observers recognize as a politically motivated prosecution.
Judge Esther Toh claimed Lai extended a “constant invitation” to the U.S. to help bring down the Chinese government, demonstrating how Beijing weaponizes vague national security laws against dissent.

Five Years of Torture and Declining Health
Lai has endured five years in custody, much of it in solitary confinement, since his August 2020 arrest under Beijing’s national security law imposed after 2019 pro-democracy protests.
His family reports severe health deterioration, including a 22-pound weight loss, loss of nails and teeth, chronic infections, back pain, diabetes, and heart problems. Despite clear evidence of mistreatment, Hong Kong authorities dismiss health concerns and claim adequate medical care, revealing their callous disregard for human dignity.
Press Freedom Dies Under Communist Rule
The Apple Daily newspaper, once Hong Kong’s leading pro-democracy voice, was forced to close in 2021 after police raided its newsroom and froze its assets. Prosecutors accused Lai of conspiring with executives to request foreign sanctions during his 156-day trial without jury.
His meetings with former Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were cited as evidence, criminalizing standard diplomatic engagement that any free society would consider legitimate political discourse.
International Condemnation Exposes Beijing’s Tyranny
President Trump has raised Lai’s case directly with China, while U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer made securing the British citizen’s release a government priority. The European Union deplored the conviction alongside rights groups including Reporters Without Borders and Amnesty International.
Reporters Without Borders’ director general Thibaut Bruttin correctly noted that “press freedom itself” was on trial and has been shattered by this verdict, exposing Beijing’s systematic destruction of Hong Kong’s promised autonomy.
