Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were swiftly evacuated around 2 a.m. on April 13, 2025, when flames consumed portions of the historic Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania State Police acted quickly, ensuring no injuries occurred as they extinguished the fire.
The initial investigation confirmed this was the work of an arsonist.
Hours later, police arrested 38-year-old Cody Balmer, a native of Harrisburg, as a suspect in the arson attack.
The fire broke out just after the Shapiro family celebrated Passover.
Despite the late night disruption, the governor expressed gratitude to those who ensured their safety, saying, “Every day, we stand with the law enforcement and first responders who run toward danger to protect our communities. Last night, they did so for our family, and Lori and I are eternally grateful to them for keeping us safe.”
The arson caused significant structural damage to the 29,000 square foot Georgian-style home, a reminder of government vulnerabilities in our own states.
While authorities investigate this heinous act, no motive has been identified.
Governor Shapiro, a Democrat with potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential election, has drawn criticism from certain groups due to his firm pro-Israel stance.
Nonetheless, linking this incident directly to his political viewpoint remains speculative and devoid of solid evidence, but raises questions on political safety in our volatile times.
