In a historic decision to be made, the Catholic Church will soon embark on a journey, deciding who will succeed Pope Francis as the 267th leader of their faith.

Beginning May 7, 2025, under a veil of tradition and secrecy, the conclave will take place within the revered Sistine Chapel.

As cardinals convene, they must confront vital modern challenges and consider the Church’s future direction.

On the heels of the Novemdiales Masses for Pope Francis, approximately 180 cardinals, with over a hundred serving as electors, will gather to set in motion this sacred election process.

The solemn event begins with a Eucharistic celebration and a votive Mass Pro Eligendo Papa, marking the occasion’s weight and significance.

The conclave’s confidentiality is paramount. Cardinal electors, including potential candidates like Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, will swear an oath to uphold the Munus Petrinum and maintain election secrecy.

As the Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations ushers “extra omnes,” non-participants are cleared from the chapel, sealing it off for the meditation on electors’ responsibilities.

A two-thirds majority is necessary to finalize the election, with structured voting procedures guiding the cardinals’ decisions.

Conservative factions within the cardinal assembly remain eager to restore core Church doctrines.

However, others, like Cardinal Baldassare Reina, advocate for continuing Pope Francis’ reforms.

British Cardinal Vincent Nichols highlights unity’s importance in preventing discord, aligning with Argentine Cardinal Ángel Sixto Rossi, who believes “There is the hope of unity,” cited by AP News.

Some, including Venezuelan Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo, expect a swift outcome.

Yet, despite a projected quick resolution, the conclave permits a break for prayer and discussion if no decision emerges after three days.

Once elected, the new pope is queried by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re: “Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?”

The final rituals occur with the Cardinal Proto-Deacon proclaiming “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; Habemus Papam” to the world, signifying a new chapter in Church leadership.

The newly-elected pope bestows his first Apostolic Blessing Urbi et Orbi, paving the way for the inauguration and formal possession of the Patriarchal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran.
