FUNERAL MASSACRE Rocks American City

Police tape and lights at crime scene.
CHILLING CRIME

Armed criminals terrorized a peaceful funeral service at a Salt Lake City church, killing two and wounding six before escaping into the night while police launch a desperate manhunt.

Story Highlights

  • Two killed, six wounded in parking lot shooting during LDS funeral service
  • Suspects remain at large after fleeing in gray or silver vehicle
  • Police gang unit involved, suggesting organized criminal activity
  • 200 funeral attendees trapped inside during active shooter situation

Criminals Strike Sacred Ground

Salt Lake City police responded to reports of gunfire at 660 N. Redwood Road around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, where a dispute in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints parking lot escalated into deadly violence.

Eight adult victims were struck by gunfire during what should have been a solemn memorial service. The brazen attack left two people dead and six others hospitalized, with three fighting for their lives in critical condition.

Police Chief Brian Redd confirmed that suspects fled the scene in a gray or silver vehicle heading north on Redwood Road. The involvement of SLCPD’s gang unit suggests this violence may stem from organized criminal activity rather than random crime. Two individuals were briefly detained for questioning but later released, leaving the actual perpetrators still roaming free.

Community Under Siege

Approximately 200 funeral attendees, including members of Tongan LDS wards that regularly use the building, were forced to shelter in place as police established a perimeter extending from 500 North to 700 North along Redwood Road.

Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots that “shook the whole place up,” followed by screaming and chaos. The Rose Park neighborhood, already struggling with periodic gang activity, now faces heightened fear as dangerous criminals remain unaccounted for.

Emergency responders closed major roadways and deployed dozens of vehicles to process the crime scene and search for suspects.

Some victims were transported to hospitals by private vehicles before police could secure witness statements, complicating the investigation. The FBI has offered assistance to local law enforcement, acknowledging the severity of this brazen attack on a house of worship.

Failed Protection of Sacred Spaces

This assault on religious freedom occurred during one of life’s most vulnerable moments—a funeral service where families gather to mourn and remember loved ones. LDS Church spokesperson Sam Penrod expressed “deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind.”

The attack demonstrates how criminal elements show no respect for the sanctity of religious institutions or basic human decency.

Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the shooting but offered little beyond empty words about events that “should never have happened outside a place of worship.” While politicians issue statements, law-abiding citizens question whether their fundamental right to worship safely is being adequately protected.

The incident exposes gaps in security that criminals exploit to bring violence into spaces meant for peace and spiritual reflection.
