Authorities confirmed Sgt. Jacob M. Durham was among those lost in a plane crash in southern Philippines.
The aircraft, a Beechcraft King Air 350, was on a mission contracted by the U.S. military for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support.
This fatal crash, which took place in a rice field in Maguindanao del Sur, involved three other individuals, all defense contractors.
Investigations into the cause are ongoing, but the loss is deeply felt across the Marine Corps community and beyond.
Sgt. Durham, hailing from Long Beach, California, was a decorated Marine with significant commendations, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
He served honorably as an electronic intelligence/electromagnetic warfare analyst, recently promoted to his rank on February 1.
In his short time since 2021 in the Marines, he had already exemplified the esteemed virtues expected of our military personnel.

“Sgt. Durham embodied the highest traditions of the Marine Corps — exemplifying composure, intelligence, and selfless leadership,” declared Lt. Col. Mabel B. Annunziata, cited by Action News Now.
“He was deeply respected and loved by his fellow Marines. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and his fellow Marines during this profoundly difficult time,” the military representative added.
Witness accounts describe seeing smoke and an explosion prior to the crash, a harrowing detail that adds to the tragedy of the mission.
The plane was part of U.S.-Philippine security cooperation, highlighting the ongoing strategic efforts in the region amid China’s territorial ambitions.
Despite the tragedy, the camaraderie and courage displayed by Sgt. Durham and his fellow servicemen is a testament to their commitment.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines confirmed the retrieval of the bodies, bringing a slight closure to their grieving families.
Camp Pendleton officials, where Sgt. Durham was based, recalled his dedication and impeccable character, painting a portrait of a Marine who was not only respected for his skills but also beloved by his comrades.
