The Campus Guardian Angel drone is roughly the size of a pizza, but it carries a layered set of tools that go far beyond a camera. Reports say it can race down hallways at 50 miles per hour, using bright strobe lights, blaring sirens, and pepper gel to overwhelm a gunman.

The system can also drop small air poppers that create loud bangs, and some descriptions mention pepper balls or flash devices to add confusion.

The company frames its response as waves of three or four drones attacking in stages. First, they confront the suspect with light, sound, and pepper to distract and degrade their ability to aim.

State funding and district deals show real buy-in, not just talk. Reports say five districts in Georgia and three in Florida are adding drones, with programs backed by state money and cost figures reaching about half a million dollars for a set of 20 to 60 drones at five high schools.

For communities tired of gridlock on gun laws, this looks like a practical tool: respond faster, hit the attacker hard, and do it without new federal rules.

Supporters argue this is about buying time, not replacing police. The company says its aim is to “greatly degrade or incapacitate” an attacker and keep the shooter occupied until “authorized responders” can apprehend them.

Safety advocates and school security experts raise concerns that line up with basic common sense. They ask what happens if a drone misidentifies a person, sprays pepper gel in a crowded hallway, or collides with a student or officer while racing at high speed.

Others worry that states are paying to turn schools into test beds before those questions are fully answered, and say more effort should go into prevention, staffing, and mental health rather than new technology alone.
