The agents, involved in sensitive investigations such as January 6 and Mar-a-Lago, assert that the government’s plans pose a threat to their professional and personal safety.
The lawsuit, filed anonymously in the D.C. federal court, reveals a troubling picture of federal overreach.
These agents, who worked on the January 6 and Mar-a-Lago cases, aim to stop the DOJ from compiling lists for potential disciplinary actions or terminations.
Sources report that the FBI Agents Association has joined the legal battle, alleging “unlawful retaliation” against their members.
Critics of this move by the DOJ express concern that releasing the agents’ names could lead to threats and harassment.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove’s request for information implies further personnel actions could be on the horizon.
The agents involved fear retaliation if their involvement is disclosed.
“The DOJ’s plan to release the names of FBI agents who investigated January 6th is an appalling attack on non-partisan public servants who have dedicated their lives to protecting our communities and our nation. It is clear that the threatened disclosure is a prelude to an unlawful purge of the FBI solely driven by the Trump Administration’s vengeful and political motivations,” stated Chris Mattei, an attorney for the FBI agents.
In addition, the lawsuit claims the DOJ’s actions infringe upon First Amendment rights and the federal Privacy Act.
The lawsuit further cautions that the dissemination of personal information could provoke vigilante actions against the agents.
Over 5,000 records were submitted to the Justice Department, yet no specific actions have been taken.

Concerns are growing amid the federal personnel changes, including forced resignations aligning with Trump’s campaign promise to eradicate the “weaponization” of federal entities.
“The agents, who filed the federal suit anonymously, included screenshots of a three-page survey they claim DOJ leadership plans to use to identify thousands of agents who worked on these politically sensitive cases,” Newsweek reports.
This legal challenge not only questions the credibility of the DOJ but also raises alarms about agency operations and the protection of individual rights in sensitive government jobs.
As this case unfolds, its implications for federal employment rights could reshape how law enforcement agencies interact with their employees.
