General Motors announced a significant recall on April 29, 2025, affecting nearly 600,000 vehicles in the United States.

This recall is due to potential defects in the 6.2L V8 gas engines, prompting the removal of Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL models from 2021 to 2024.

The issue concerns possible manufacturing errors in key engine parts, including the connecting rod and crankshaft.

These potential malfunctions pose concrete safety risks. The defects in these engine components could lead to significant engine damage or failure.

Warning signs for vehicle owners include unusual knocking sounds, the check engine light activating, and unexpected performance problems such as abnormal shifting.

This recall also highlights the broader implications for GM’s reputation as it endeavors to assure its customers of their commitment to safety and satisfaction.

Globally, this issue affects approximately 721,000 vehicles, including those in the U.S.

Notably, GM recorded a dozen potentially related crashes and injuries, although these were mostly minor or non-physical.

Owners of these vehicles can have their engines inspected, and any necessary repairs or replacements made for free at Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC dealerships.

Moreover, vehicles passing inspection will receive a new oil fill cap, replacement of the oil filter, a switch to a higher viscosity oil, and an owner’s manual update, all at no cost.

The discovery of this engine issue stems from an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which began in January over numerous reports of engine failures.

GM’s internal investigation also cited over 28,000 field complaints or incidents relevant to engine problems.

Owner notifications will be mailed on June 9, 2025, offering additional resources for vehicle owners to stay informed.

For those affected, customer service for Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC provides an additional support line, utilizing recall number N252494000.

Vehicles caught in this recall span those manufactured between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.

It should be noted that GM claims to have resolved these manufacturing issues since June of the previous year.

Despite this effort, vigilance remains crucial as the broader community awaits the conclusion of this safety chapter.

GM’s strong market presence remains unshaken as they sold 2.7 million vehicles in the U.S. last year, reflecting a 4% increase from 2023.
