This upheaval followed a heated exchange between Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
On March 1, 2025, Vice President JD Vance and his family were moved to a secure location from their Vermont vacation after facing pro-Ukrainian demonstrations.
Tensions flared up at Sugarbush Ski Resort as protestors labeled Vance a “traitor,” linking him to Nazi ideology.
Demonstrators held signs criticizing President Trump and expressing support for Ukraine.
Protestors accused Vance of doing “Trump and Putin’s” dirty work and displayed derogatory messages.
Vance’s family skied on a different mountain side to evade these disruptions before security concerns led to their relocation.
The uproar stems from a contentious White House meeting where Ukrainian President Zelensky was dismissed without signing a minerals deal, reflecting broader discontent towards foreign alliances.
The meeting with Zelensky, attended by President Donald Trump, became heated when Vance challenged Zelensky for disrespecting the Oval Office.
Vance criticized Ukraine’s forced conscription, urging Zelensky to appreciate American efforts to end the conflict.
This confrontation soon turned protestors’ attention to Vance, branding him a “national disgrace” and suggesting he “go ski in Russia.”
During this showdown, Trump emphasized the significant financial and military aid provided to Ukraine, calling out the Ukrainian leader for not being ready for peace.
Vance’s rebuke of Zelensky, however, earned praise from Republicans like Senator Lindsey Graham.
Graham declared, “I was very proud of JD Vance standing up for our country.”
Counter-protesters, sporting “Make America Great Again” flags, clashed with those supporting Ukraine, igniting further confrontations.
Meanwhile, Trump criticized Zelensky for taking advantage of U.S. involvement in negotiations, expressing disappointment with Zelensky’s lack of respect.
Trump remarked, “He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”
