Led by Senator Mike Lee, the DEFUND Act proposes cutting ties and financial obligations to an organization that many believe no longer serves U.S. interests.
Senator Mike Lee of Utah spearheaded the introduction of the DEFUND Act, seeking to extricate the U.S. from the United Nations and restore both national sovereignty and fiscal accountability.
The bill aims to repeal laws linking the U.S. to the U.N., including the foundational United Nations Participation Act of 1945, and intends to terminate all U.S. financial contributions to the U.N.
The United States has been the greatest financial supporter of the U.N., contributing over $18 billion in 2022, which comprises roughly one-third of the U.N.’s total budget.
Critics argue these substantial funds could be better allocated towards addressing urgent domestic needs such as infrastructure and social programs.
Senators Marsha Blackburn and Rick Scott are among the staunch supporters of the DEFUND Act, with Representatives Mike Rogers and Chip Roy introducing a companion bill in the House of Representatives.
A significant feature of the proposal includes revoking diplomatic immunity for U.N. officials operating within the U.S.
“No more blank checks for the United Nations. Americans’ hard-earned dollars have been funneled into initiatives that fly in the face of our values, enabling tyrants, betraying allies, and spreading bigotry. With the DEFUND Act, we’re stepping away from this debacle. If we engage with the UN in the future, it will be on our terms, with the full backing of the Senate and an iron-clad escape clause,” said Sen. Mike Lee, cited by Deseret.
Despite the opposition to the U.N., public opinion remains divided, with 52% of Americans still viewing the organization favorably.
This sentiment predominantly stems from Democrats, while Republicans are more critical.
President Trump exemplified this critical stance by previously reducing U.S. funding to the U.N. and withdrawing from the U.N. Human Rights Council.
The DEFUND Act outlines conditions for any potential future re-entry into the U.N., stipulating that such a move requires Senate approval and firm withdrawal provisions.
The proposals extend further by calling for a withdrawal from the World Health Organization and other U.N.-affiliated bodies.
“What has the United Nations achieved?” echoes Representative Chip Roy’s sentiment, challenging the efficacy of the U.N. in addressing global crises such as wars and pandemics.
As discussions around the DEFUND Act unfold, its fate remains uncertain.
“The UN has devolved into a platform for tyrants and a venue to attack America and her allies. We should stop paying for it. As President Trump revolutionizes our foreign policy by putting America first, we should withdraw from this sham organization…" https://t.co/1Yj6Zs3dkB
