The agreement was announced following a lengthy call between the two leaders on March 18, 2025.
The conversation, which lasted over 90 minutes, focused on establishing peace between Russia and Ukraine by initiating discussions for a comprehensive ceasefire.
Trump posted on Truth Social, “We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine.”
The Kremlin has additionally announced a 30-day halt to strikes on critical infrastructure as part of this preliminary agreement.
Putin emphasized the importance of ending foreign military aid to Ukraine—a matter also discussed during Trump’s call.
The intention is to gradually reduce hostilities, focusing initially on stopping attacks near energy facilities and other infrastructural targets.
Discussions have brought up the need for a lasting peace agreement and include possibilities for a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea.

Further details reveal Trump is not only seeking to halt the aggression but is also aiming to forge a strong relationship with Moscow.
Nonetheless, some analysts caution that Russia’s commitment to a ceasefire might be unreliable, referencing past violations.

Ukrainian President Zelensky remains skeptical, highlighting his doubts about Putin’s genuine intentions for peace.
The Trump administration’s determination to secure a resolution to this conflict has led to controversial choices, including a brief pause on military aid to Ukraine.
After Zelensky’s agreement to the ceasefire terms, the aid has since resumed.
Additionally, issues surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant have been highlighted, stressing its importance as a major energy provider in Ukraine.
“What’s happening in Ukraine is not good, but we’re going to see if we can work a peace agreement, a ceasefire and peace. And I think we’ll be able to do it,” Trump optimistically claims.
